Movie ‘Arcadia’ picked for Oscars 2026 as Greek entry

·

Greece has officially selected the film Arcadia by director Giorgos Zois as its entry for the 98th Academy Awards (OSCARS) in the International Feature Film category, according to tovima.com. The submission will represent the country at the 98th edition of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences (AMPAS) in the United States.

The choice was made after extensive deliberation by the special committee established by the Ministry of Culture, which voted by majority in favor of Arcadia.

In its reasoning, the panel emphasized the film’s “outstanding technical and distinctive artistic merit,” noting that it also conveys a “distinct Greek identity.” The committee further highlighted the movie’s growing international recognition through screenings at major global festivals.

Committee members are appointed by the Ministry of Culture based on nominations from professional film bodies. For 2025, the committee was set up under Ministerial Decision ΥΠΠΟ/341673/24.07.2025, issued by the Deputy Minister of Culture.

A statement from the Ministry explained: “the process ensures the timely completion of all procedures for Greece’s participation in the 98th Academy Awards, in accordance with the rules of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences (AMPAS). ΥΠΠΟ/303859/02.07.2025 (B’3615), the film representing Greece in the OSCAR process, is proposed by the Ministry of Culture, following the recommendation of an eleven-member committee formed exclusively for this purpose.”

With Arcadia now set as Greece’s official Oscar hopeful, the country aims to showcase its cinematic creativity on one of the world’s most prestigious stages.
