NSW Government commits to support launch of the Australian Championship

Football Australia has welcomed the NSW Government’s announcement of $300,000 in seed funding to support the inaugural season of the Australian Championship.

This funding commitment by NSW Government demonstrates their commitment to the important historical, cultural and sporting significance of the Australian Championship.

The funding will elevate the Australian Championship by engaging with multicultural communities, enhancing venues with equipment and minor infrastructure upgrades, and enable key matches to be broadcast nationally. This investment ensures the competition reaches new audiences, showcases emerging talent, and cements its place as a flagship event on the Australian football calendar.

This investment underscores the NSW Government’s commitment to supporting elite football pathways, increasing participation, and ensuring the Australian Championship has a lasting impact on local communities and the broader sporting landscape.

The funding was provided under the NSW Government’s Project Support Program which supports improved access and participation for underrepresented groups.

The Program’s objectives include supporting community sport events and projects that improve the NSW sports sector.

Football Australia Interim Chief Executive officer, Heather Garriock, said: “The Australian Championship is a game-changer for football by lifting historic community clubs and creating a bridge from grassroots to the professional level. This funding will help shine a spotlight on clubs with deep roots in NSW’s multicultural and regional communities.”

“I want to thank Minister Steve Kamper and the NSW Government for their commitment and support for our inaugural season of the Australian Championships,” Ms Garriock added.

“This investment will not only help clubs meet national standards but also connect communities across the state to this exciting new competition, bringing football – and its opportunities – to more people than ever before.”
