Greek glory: Panathinaikos, PAOK and AEK reach European play-offs

·

It was a perfect European night for Greek football as Panathinaikos, PAOK and AEK all secured their places in the play-offs of their respective competitions, keeping their continental hopes alive.

Panathinaikos triumph in penalty drama

Panathinaikos booked their spot in the UEFA Europa League play-offs after a tense goalless draw against Shakhtar Donetsk in Krakow was settled on penalties.

Polish goalkeeper Bartlomiej Dragowski produced a night to remember, saving three spot-kicks from Nazarina, Kaua Elias and Pedro Henrique to guide the “Greens” to a 4-3 shootout victory.

They will now face Turkish side Samsunspor on 21 and 28 August.

PAOK leave it late in Austria

PAOK also progressed to the Europa League play-offs after a gruelling encounter with Austrian side Wolfsberger.

Following a 0-0 draw in Thessaloniki, the tie went to extra time in Austria, where substitute Mady Camara struck in the 115th minute to secure a 1-0 win on the night.

Goalkeeper Jiri Pavlenka was once again instrumental in the result. PAOK will now meet Croatian club Rijeka.

AEK edge past Aris Limassol

AEK advanced to the UEFA Conference League play-offs after overcoming Cypriot side Aris Limassol 3-1 in extra time at the OPAP Arena.

Following a 2-2 draw in the first leg, goals from new signings Derek Kutesa and Luka Jovic in the 104th and 109th minutes sealed the win.

AEK will now face Belgian side Anderlecht for a place in the group stage.

The result also sees them through to the UEFA Europa League playoffs, where they will face Norwegian side Brann.
