Victory for ‘The General’ Peter Sarikakis: Minotaurs win fight for female-friendly facilities

·

After years of advocacy, Hurstville City Minotaurs FC President Peter Sarikakis – affectionately known as ‘The General’ – has finally secured council support for much-needed upgrades to the club’s amenities at Beverly Hills Park.

Sarikakis, who founded the grassroots football club in 1985 to support disadvantaged youth, recently made an impassioned plea to Georges River Council after learning the club was excluded from the 2025–26 capital works budget.

He highlighted the lack of basic facilities for the club’s growing number of female players, who currently must walk 300 metres to access toilets.

“The amenities block is what drives females away from our club,” he said in a speech.

Councillor Sam Stratikopoulos backed Sarikakis, describing the current facilities as “substandard, disgusting, decrepit,” and praising the president’s dedication to supporting local youth.

Following the appeal, the council amended its four-year capital works plan to include a new amenities block for the Minotaurs. Mayor Elise Borg said, “In 2025 there shouldn’t even be a discussion about providing toilets for females at sporting grounds.”

Football St George also welcomed the decision, noting the importance of proper facilities as female participation in the sport continues to grow.
