SYRIZA and PASOK leaders respond to election defeat in Greece

·

SYRIZA-Progressive Alliance leader, Alexis Tsipras, said on Monday that he was not “giving up the fight” after his party’s big defeat in Greece’s national elections on Sunday, ekathimerini.com reports.

“I have learned in difficult times to take responsibility and not give up the fight. I am here. I will not give up now, even in the middle of a difficult fight,” he said in a statement.

Tsipras said that in the second elections, which could be held by the latest July 2, his party will try to “primarily prevent the prospect of an omnipotent and uncontrollable sovereign-prime minister,” and safeguard the Left’s leading role in Greece.

He also added that SYRIZA will remain “the main body of progressive forces, representing popular and social interests, defending the world of labour.”

With PASOK’s ratings increasing by more than 40% compared to 2019, there is a clear possibility now it could be catapulted back to being the main opposition party.

According to ekathimerini.com, PASOK leader Nikos Androulakis, appeared optimistic after the election results. The leader issued an invitation “to every democrat, every progressive Greek, to fight together on this new promising course.”

He called on voters to strengthen “the real and genuine opponent of New Democracy.”
