Saved icon returns to the Church of Saint Demitrios in Thessaloniki

·

Saved by a family of Thessalonians during the fires of 1917, the icon of Our Lady of Theotokos has been returned to the Church of Saint Demitrios.

In 1917, the icon was stored in the church and whilst the destructive fires swept through Thessaloniki, the Kaltsa family rescued the icon and took it with them to Chalkida in 1930.

During the church service, the Eminence Metropolitan Filotheos of Thessaloniki explained that one of the family members had approached him during his visit to Chalkida and told him to return the icon to its rightful place.

With the return of the icon, the plan is to conserve and place it in the church to remind them of the fire of 1917 and protect them from any threat against the city.
