Perth IT professional Michael Clapsis jailed over years-long hack

·

Perth father-of-three Michael Clapsis, 44, has been jailed after the District Court heard he lived a “double life,” using his IT expertise to hack women’s personal data and amass thousands of intimate images and videos over nearly a decade.

Clapsis was arrested at Perth Airport in April 2024 after a suspicious Wi-Fi network was reported.

AFP officers found he had used a portable wireless access device to create “evil twin” free Wi-Fi networks that tricked victims into connecting. He later deleted nearly 2000 images and videos of 17 women when asked for his device PIN code.

Police discovered Clapsis had organised the files into folders named after each woman and had also accessed confidential AFP meetings via his employer’s laptop.

His lawyer said the offending “was done for sexual voyeurism” and that Clapsis “has brought shame to himself and his family.”

Judge Darren Renton sentenced him to seven years and four months in prison, with parole eligibility after three years and eight months.
