Yiannis Xipolitas, one of the most respected and decorated coaches in New South Wales football, has died, with Football NSW paying tribute to his lasting impact on the game.
Born in Cyprus, Xipolitas enjoyed a distinguished playing career with Olympiakos Nicosia in the Cypriot First Division and earned two international caps for Cyprus before emigrating to Australia.
After arriving in Australia, he became a prominent coach across NSW, leading clubs including Canterbury-Marrickville Olympic, Sydney Olympic, Cyprus United and Belmore Hercules throughout the 1970s, 80s and 90s.
Football NSW said he was renowned for his leadership and football knowledge and played a key role in developing players who went on to represent Australia.
“Football NSW extends its deepest and sincerest condolences to the Xipolitas family. May he rest in peace,” the organisation said.
He was widely regarded as a mentor and influential figure across the state’s football community, with his coaching legacy spanning multiple decades.
