Nick Politis raises concerns over Albanese government’s tax overhaul

·

Billionaire businessman and Sydney Roosters chairman Nick Politis has joined a growing chorus of prominent sporting figures criticising the Albanese government’s budget changes, arguing the reforms appear focused on raising revenue rather than boosting housing supply.

Politis, who built his fortune through car dealerships and property, expressed scepticism about the government’s overhaul of capital gains tax, negative gearing and family trust arrangements.

“The trouble with it is that no one understands it. I don’t understand it,” Politis said.

“They say it will increase the supply of houses, but how? Do you know? I think they are just raising more revenue.”

His comments came as several high-profile athletes and business leaders from the sporting world warned the reforms could discourage investment, entrepreneurship and long-term wealth creation, particularly for younger Australians and professional athletes whose earning capacity is often limited to relatively short careers.

Among those voicing concerns were former AFL star Chris Judd, Olympic champion Grant Hackett, Chad Warner and former rugby player turned entrepreneur Damien Fitzpatrick, who argued the tax changes could reduce incentives for investment, business creation and financial security.
