Mitsotakis becomes first Greek PM to visit Moldova, pledges energy and EU support

·

Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis has made a historic visit to Moldova — the first by a Greek head of government — where he held talks with President Maia Sandu and Prime Minister Dorin Recean to deepen bilateral ties and support Moldova’s EU aspirations.

During the visit, Mitsotakis emphasised Greece’s readiness to contribute to Moldova’s energy security, highlighting infrastructure such as the Revythousa LNG terminal and the Alexandroupoli floating storage and regasification unit (FSRU). These, he said, could help deliver natural gas via the Trans-Balkan pipeline to both Moldova and Ukraine, reinforcing regional energy stability.

The leaders also discussed closer cooperation in renewable energy, digital innovation, tourism, and connectivity. Mitsotakis praised Moldova’s progress in renewable energy and the IT sector and encouraged stronger links between Greek and Moldovan businesses. He also called for direct flights between the two countries to boost tourism and cultural exchange.

Greece’s support for Moldova’s sovereignty and territorial integrity was reaffirmed, especially in light of the ongoing war in Ukraine. Mitsotakis expressed full backing for Moldova’s European integration, pledging technical assistance and highlighting the long-term benefits of EU-aligned reforms, despite their short-term challenges.

In a symbolic gesture, Mitsotakis visited the historic house of Michail Katsikas in Chisinau — once the headquarters of the Filiki Eteria in Moldova.

He concluded by underlining the importance of continuing cooperation across sectors and maintaining momentum on Moldova’s EU path.
