Hydra introduces digital permits to tighten vehicle access

·

Vehicle restrictions on the island of Hydra will become stricter later this month with the introduction of a new digital permit system, aimed at preserving the island’s historic character and easing congestion, according to ekathimerini.com.

Under the updated rules, only public-use and professional vehicles linked to ongoing construction projects will be allowed entry. Private vehicles remain strictly prohibited, maintaining Hydra’s long-standing ban on wheeled transport under its conservation laws.

Permit applications must be submitted online at hydrapass.gov.gr, using national TaxisNet credentials. Applicants must provide vehicle details, duration of stay, reason for transport, and any required documentation. Each application covers a single vehicle and will be reviewed by Culture Ministry staff.

Approved permits will be issued through the gov.gr portal, featuring a timestamp and QR code for verification. Police and port authorities will use these codes for real-time checks.

“Through a simple, user-friendly digital service, applicants will be able to obtain the necessary permit without bureaucratic delays and with full transparency,” said Digital Governance Minister Dimitris Papastergiou. “Hydra is a place of unique cultural significance, and we have a duty to protect it.”

Culture Minister Lina Mendoni added that the system supports the island’s “environmental and cultural footprint, as well as the local community.”
