Historic honour for Greek volcanologist Evi Nomikos

·

Professor Paraskevi (Evi) Nomikos has been awarded the prestigious Fisher Medal by the International Association of Volcanology and Chemistry of the Earth’s Interior (IAVCEI), making her the first Greek volcanologist to receive the distinction, according to an article by Yiannis Elafros and ekathimerini.com.

The Fisher Medal, named after American volcanologist Richard Fisher, is awarded every four years following a rigorous selection process. It honors exceptional contributions to the field of volcanology. Nomikos, a professor of geological oceanography at the University of Athens, was recognized for her groundbreaking work on submarine volcanic morphology and marine volcanic activity.

A native of Santorini, Nomikos has led more than 80 oceanographic expeditions, focusing on Greece’s underwater volcanoes, including Kolumbo and the Santorini volcanic complex. She is also the founder of SANTORY, the country’s first submarine volcano observatory, which has provided vital data during recent seismic events.

The award will be formally presented to Nomikos on July 2 in Geneva during the IAVCEI Scientific Assembly.
