Greek violinist Leonidas Kavakos joins Academy of Athens

·

Violinist Leonidas Kavakos has been elected as an Academician of Greece’s Academy of Athens, The Violin Channel has reported.

The Academy of Athens is the oldest research institution in Greece and was founded in 1926 to promote the sciences, fine art and humanities.

The organisation supports scientific research, funds publications, offers awards and grants scholarships.

In March 2022, Leonidas was declared a regular member of the Chair of Music in the Second Class of Letters and Fine Arts.

He has been recognised for his services to music including sharing classical music in Greece’s remote communities where there is little access to it.

During his recent election ceremony, Leonidas gave a speech titled “Life is Music and Music is Life,” as he was welcomed by the President and General Secretary of the Academy.

“It is a great honour for me to have been elected for the Chair of Music at the Athens Academy,” Leonidas posted on his Facebook.

Born into a musical family in Athens, Greece, in 1967, Leonidas began learning the violin when he was six years old.

He has since built a strong profile as both a violinist and conductor for countless major orchestras, and has also been curating an annual violin and chamber-music masterclass in Athens.
