Greek farmers vow to escalate protests after proposed talks branded ‘pretend’

·

Greek farmers have vowed to escalate their protests following a nationwide meeting in Lefkonas, Serres, attended by representatives from 57 protest blockades across the country.

The meeting focused on coordinating action and planning the next phase of mobilisation, with farmers expressing strong dissatisfaction with the government’s response.

They rejected the prospect of dialogue, describing proposed talks as “pretend” and accusing the government of “playing” the rural world while their core demands remain unresolved.

By unanimous decision, participants agreed to strengthen existing roadblocks and adopt more dynamic forms of protest in the coming period to increase pressure for meaningful solutions to the challenges facing the primary sector.

Representatives warned that farmers are facing survival issues and called on the Prime Minister to take immediate action to safeguard agricultural activity in rural areas.

Despite plans to intensify protests, farmers said they would not obstruct the movement of citizens. Toll booths will remain open during weekends and over the Christmas and New Year holiday period, allowing motorists to pass freely, as demonstrators seek to avoid turning public opinion against them.
