Greek Australian surfer Mercury Psillakis killed in shark attack at Dee Why

·

A tragic shark attack at Dee Why Beach on Sydney’s Northern Beaches has claimed the life of 57-year-old Greek Australian surfer Mercury Psillakis.

The well-known local, a member of the Long Reef Boardriders Association and former club champion, was surfing with friends on Saturday morning when he was mauled about 100 metres offshore.

Police said he suffered “catastrophic injuries” and lost several limbs before being pulled from the water by members of the public. Despite rescue attempts, he died at the scene.

Psillakis leaves behind his wife and young daughter, with the tragedy striking on the eve of Father’s Day.

Authorities have closed Dee Why and Long Reef beaches for up to 72 hours while police, surf lifesavers and the Department of Primary Industries investigate.

The incident comes as NSW councils prepare to trial the removal of shark nets, long criticised for ensnaring other marine life.

Northern Beaches Mayor Sue Heins reiterated the council’s support for replacing nets with modern safety technologies, while state officials stressed that swimmer safety remains the top priority.
