Mitsotakis unveils plans to expand Evros border fence

·

Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis has announced plans to extend the Evros border fence to cover the entire length of Greece’s frontier with Turkey.

Speaking during a visit to the flood-affected Evros region, Mitsotakis said additional border guards and cameras would also be deployed to the area, where tens of thousands of migrants attempted to cross from Turkey in 2020. He did not provide a timeline for the expansion.

According to United Nations data, 1,100 of the 3,090 people who have entered Greece illegally so far this year crossed via the Evros land border.

In 2025, about 7,000 of the 41,700 migrants who arrived in Greece entered through the Evros area.
