Former MP Philip Dalidakis slams Daniel Andrews over Beijing parade appearance

·

Former Victorian trade and investment minister Philip Dalidakis has criticised ex-premier Daniel Andrews for attending a military parade in Beijing alongside leaders including Vladimir Putin and Kim Jong-un.

“It’s not the first time that Daniel has put self-interest ahead of the national interest but at least this time he’s a private citizen,” Dalidakis told the Herald Sun.

Andrews’ trip has drawn sharp rebukes from former and current Labor colleagues, with some accusing him of having “no shame” and being “venal.” The controversy has reignited debate over his links to Chinese donors ahead of the 2014 state election.

Premier Jacinta Allan defended her predecessor, saying: “It is good for Victoria that Daniel Andrews is held in such high regard by the people of China.” But Deputy Premier Ben Carroll distanced himself, noting: “It’s not something I would have done.”

Andrews issued a statement defending his visit, arguing a constructive relationship with China remained “in Australia’s national interest.”
