Born in Limassol, Cyprus, in 1970 and relocating to Melbourne, Australia, with her family at just nine months old, Filli Kaoullas embodies the modern Cypriot diaspora story — one defined by migration, resilience, identity, and an unwavering devotion to heritage and philanthropy.
Today, as Vice President of the Cyprus Diaspora Forum and Country Manager for Australia and New Zealand, Kaoullas has emerged as one of the most influential forces in uniting global Cypriots while strategically strengthening Cyprus’ cultural, social, and economic future.
Growing up in Australia, Kaoullas’ Cypriot roots were not simply remembered; they were actively lived. In a multicultural society where maintaining ethnic identity could often be challenging, her family ensured that Cyprus remained central to daily life. Weekly Sunday gatherings with extended family, Greek schooling, and immersion in traditional dance created an environment where heritage was both preserved and celebrated.
While carrying the distinct name “Erifilli” may have posed challenges in Australia, Kaoullas’ upbringing instilled pride rather than compromise.
Her deep cultural engagement led her to join the Greek Cypriot community dance group as a teenager, where she spent eight and a half years performing before eventually founding her own dance school. For more than 12 years, Kaoullas used dance not only as artistic expression but as a vehicle for preserving Cypriot culture, educating younger generations, and fostering communal identity abroad.
A defining turning point came in 1989 when Kaoullas participated in a Cyprus government initiative that invited young diaspora Cypriots to reconnect with their ancestral homeland. This experience profoundly impacted her, strengthening her emotional and cultural ties to Cyprus while reaffirming her long-term commitment to the island. “It was more than a visit — it was a permanent stamp on my identity,” she stated.
That deep-rooted connection would later evolve into transformative leadership. Approximately four years ago, during a women’s networking event in Limassol, Kaoullas met Cyprus Diaspora Forum Founder and CEO Paul Lambis. When Lambis shared his vision for creating a world-class platform that would unite Cypriots globally, Kaoullas immediately recognised its necessity and potential. Her response was unequivocal: “Absolutely — let me help you.”
That moment marked the beginning of a powerful strategic partnership. Kaoullas became not only a supporter of the Cyprus Diaspora Forum but one of its principal architects. Her collaboration with Lambis has helped shape the forum into arguably the most important and strategic diaspora initiative Cyprus has seen in modern history.
As Vice President, and Country Manager for Australia and New Zealand, Kaoullas’ role extends far beyond administration. She actively identifies influential Cypriots across Australia’s extensive diaspora community — estimated at approximately 85,000 individuals — including business leaders, innovators, researchers, and entrepreneurs whose expertise and networks can contribute meaningfully to Cyprus’ future. Through her extensive philanthropic, cultural, and professional involvement, she has cultivated relationships with exceptional individuals whose achievements may otherwise remain disconnected from Cyprus itself.
Her mission is clear: to bridge Cyprus with its diaspora not merely through cultural celebration, but through strategic collaboration, investment opportunities, policy development, and international partnerships. Kaoullas views the Cyprus Diaspora Forum as a vital global platform capable of transforming diaspora relations into measurable national value.
And the results speak for themselves. The Australian contingent has grown from a modest group of just twelve participants in its inaugural year to a powerful delegation of over forty individuals attending this year’s forum. This remarkable growth has been so significant that the Australian High Commission now plays an active role in the Cyprus Diaspora Forum, hosting a pre-forum gathering that further strengthens diplomatic, business, and community ties before the official commencement of the event.
The impact extends far beyond attendance. Several Australian-based Cypriots have already begun relocating their businesses to Cyprus, capitalising on the Cyprus government’s highly attractive incentives designed to encourage global talent, innovation, and investment back to the island. This year’s Cyprus Diaspora Forum also celebrated the signing of multiple Memoranda of Understanding (MOUs), many of which involved Cypriot Australians, further demonstrating the forum’s growing influence as a platform for strategic international collaboration.
Among its most notable achievements was the September 2025 visit of Cyprus’ Chief Scientist, Demetris Skourides, to Australia, accompanied by High Commissioner Antonis Sammoutis.
“This important mission was a direct result of relationships forged during the second edition of the Cyprus Diaspora Forum and underscored Cyprus’ strategic ambition to position itself as a vital gateway hub to Europe,” Kaoullas explained.
“Focused on strengthening research, technology, and innovation partnerships between Cyprus and Australia, the visit laid the foundation for meaningful bilateral cooperation and long-term opportunities across multiple sectors.”
For Kaoullas, building bridges between Cyprus and Australia creates a “home away from home” for global Cypriots while simultaneously fostering investment, innovation, and cross-border opportunity.
“Through reforms, memoranda of understanding, and targeted collaborations, I see enormous potential for diaspora-led economic development that benefits both Cyprus and international stakeholders,” she added.
Her strategic efforts are already yielding results. Corporate entities such as ESG Performance Group and MWAN Group, alongside biotech innovators and global entrepreneurs, are increasingly exploring Cyprus as a viable business and innovation hub. Kaoullas’ work positions Cyprus not simply as a homeland, but as an active participant in a globally connected future.
The road has not been without challenges. Funding large-scale diaspora initiatives remains a significant obstacle, particularly in the early stages of establishing trust and credibility. Yet Kaoullas remained steadfast, reinforcing her belief that once governments, corporations, and investors witnessed the Forum’s potential, support would follow — and it has.
Beyond her professional and diaspora leadership roles, Kaoullas is also deeply devoted to her family and healthcare career. She is a loving wife to her husband, Andreas, and a dedicated mother to her children, Michaela and Photi. In addition to spearheading diaspora initiatives, she has built a respected career as a surgical technician specialising in neurosurgery.
Kaoullas attributes her career transition to one of the most difficult periods of her life, when her husband was diagnosed with a life-threatening brain tumour. During that time, she remained at home caring for him and helping nurse him back to health. The experience profoundly changed her perspective and inspired her to give back to the healthcare system that had saved her husband’s life.
With philanthropy deeply embedded in her DNA, Kaoullas returned to school for three years and qualified as a surgical technician. For the past 14 years, she has worked at one of Australia’s leading private hospitals, dedicating herself to supporting patients and medical teams in highly specialised neurosurgical procedures. Her journey into healthcare reflects the same resilience, compassion, and commitment to service that define her diaspora work.
While Paul Lambis conceived the vision for the Cyprus Diaspora Forum, it is the collective leadership of Lambis, Director Niki Charalambous, and Vice President Filli Kaoullas — through their relentless energy, strategic outreach, and extensive diaspora expertise — that has transformed the Forum into an internationally respected institution. Together, their combined dedication has propelled the Cyprus Diaspora Forum into a powerful global platform that unites Cypriots worldwide, fosters meaningful international partnerships, and positions Cyprus as a leading force in diaspora engagement, innovation, and cross-border collaboration.
Looking toward 2027 and beyond, Kaoullas’ ambitions remain expansive. She aims to introduce new diaspora regions, including emerging Cypriot communities from Asia and beyond, while continually elevating the calibre, reach, and impact of the forum.
