FECCA’s Peter Doukas OAM condemns violence against Jewish community in Australia

·

The Federation of Ethnic Communities’ Councils of Australia (FECCA) has condemned in unequivocal terms the further violence against the Jewish community in Australia.

On Friday, July 5, in Melbourne’s CBD, masked protesters stormed a restaurant reportedly targeted because of its Israeli ownership. That same night, an attempted arson attack was made on a synagogue in East Melbourne.

In a statement FECCA said “these acts reflect not only the worst form of ethnically targeted criminality, but they have endangered innocent members of the Jewish community and, in the case of the Miznon restaurant attack, members of the broader public with no connection to the conflict.”

FECCA Chairperson Peter Doukas OAM said, “These attacks serve no political, social or cultural purpose. They are not advocacy. They do not even reflect advocacy about the plight of Palestinians.”

FECCA works with the Federal Government to strengthen the legislative framework to protect not only the expression of rights of the Jewish community in formal places of worship or community assembly, but also to protect all institutions and businesses that serve a far deeper cultural purpose in our pluralistic society.

Social and community cohesion remains our greatest asset. Without it, all the other strengths of this country are undermined. FECCA has called on all political leadership to work towards making this form of prejudice a thing of the past.
