Border crossings drop as Greece further extends Evros fence

·

Greece will extend its border fence in Evros by a further five kilometres, Minister for Citizen Protection Michalis Chrysochoidis announced on Monday, August 4 during a visit to the Soufli area.

Speaking during an on-site inspection, Chrysochoidis was updated by senior police officials on the latest developments in migration and border control in the region.

Standing before the existing fence, he declared: “What stands behind me, the fence, is a key deterrent project.”

He emphasised that closing strategic gaps in the barrier is part of a broader effort to reinforce national security, describing border protection as a foundational element of that goal.

New data shows a drop in illegal border crossings, with 2,518 arrests recorded in the first seven months of 2025 compared to 3,421 in the same period last year.

Authorities attribute the decrease to enhanced control measures, including the expanded fence, upgraded electronic surveillance systems, and increased police presence.
