Australian Prime Minister honours Greek Independence Day and Greek Australian legacy

·

Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese has marked Greek Independence Day with a message honouring Greece’s historic struggle for freedom while paying tribute to the generations of Greek Australians who have helped shape the nation.

Reflecting on the legacy of the 1821 revolution, the Prime Minister acknowledged the courage of those who fought for liberty and highlighted the enduring bond between Australia and one of the world’s largest Greek diasporas, praising the community’s energy, resilience and lasting contribution to modern Australia.

Full message in English:

On Greek Independence Day, we celebrate a great nation born in freedom and remember the revolutionaries who so courageously put their lives on the line for liberty.

This is a day of celebration for our Hellenic sisters and brothers worldwide. It is also an opportunity for all Australians to take joy in our profound connection with Greece. The immigrants who arrived in the post-war years gave Australia one of the world’s largest Greek diasporas in the world, and as they thrived here beneath the southern sky they became integral to the story of our modern nation.

I thank Greek Australians for all you have added to Australia through your energy, aspiration and hard work, and a love of this country that is so perfectly balanced with the love of the land of your heritage.

Just as you celebrate your day of independence, Australia will always celebrate your ongoing contribution to our great nation.

Zito i Ellas!

The Hon Anthony Albanese MP
Prime Minister of Australia
