Alexis Tsipras accused of ‘rewriting history’ as political return looms

·

Greek Government spokesperson Pavlos Marinakis has taken aim at Alexis Tsipras, accusing the former prime minister of having built his political career on populism, as speculation grows about a possible return to frontline politics.

“He managed, in those years, to take advantage of a difficult situation, he invested in populism, and history has recorded that,” Marinakis remarked.

He added that the Greek public has already given its verdict on Tsipras, both while he governed the country and later when he led the opposition during the 2023 general elections.

“Instead of self-criticism, he chooses to ask the citizens to criticise themselves,” he said, insisting that the current government’s record under New Democracy should be judged on its own merits, not in comparison with its rivals.

Marinakis also dismissed recent comments by Tsipras, including the claim that poverty had risen under New Democracy but fallen during his own administration.

“For him to say that he made us wealthier, well, he can say it, but I don’t know who believes him. He has already been judged by the citizens. Instead of trying to rewrite history, I believe it would be better for him to engage in self-criticism,” he concluded.
