Tennis champion Novak Djokovic has spoken openly about feeling Greek as he settles into life in Athens after relocating from Serbia with his family.
Now living in Greece for less than a year, Djokovic said the move has quickly begun to feel permanent.
Asked whether he feels Greek, he replied: “I do, I do. I still need to learn Greek. I’m not very good with the language; it’s not easy.”
Djokovic and his wife Jelena moved to Athens with their two children following a period of political tension in Serbia, where the player faced backlash after publicly supporting student protests following a deadly railway collapse in Novi Sad.
He has since spoken warmly about Greece, citing shared history, culture and values.
“I really feel that the Greek and Serbian people are like brothers,” he said, adding that lifestyle, food and climate also played a role in the decision.
Djokovic has already made his mark on Greek tennis, winning the revived Hellenic Championship in Athens – his 101st career title – telling fans in his victory speech: “Like at home. I love it!”
