Where do Greek Australians stand? Public forum to tackle sovereignty, republic and identity

·

Greek Australian Conversations will host a public discussion in Melbourne this weekend examining questions of Indigenous sovereignty, republicanism and the place of Greek Australians within Australia’s multicultural society.

Titled “Indigenous Sovereignty / Republic / Bondi – Connecting the dots… Where do Greek Australians stand?”, the forum will take place on Sunday, 22 February 2026, from 3pm at PATRIS.

The discussion will feature two prominent speakers: Esther Anatolitis, an Honorary Associate Professor at RMIT University’s School of Art and Co-Chair of the Australian Republic Movement, and George Vassilacopoulos, a philosopher, author and long-standing community activist.

Anatolitis is widely recognised for her work across the cultural, civic and political spheres. With more than two decades of leadership in arts and media, she has served on major national boards and has been a prominent public voice on issues including marriage equality, the Indigenous Voice to Parliament and Australia’s constitutional future. Her recent publications include Place, Practice, Politics (2022) and When Australia Became a Republic (2025).

Vassilacopoulos, an adjunct member of the Philosophy Program at La Trobe University, has been active in community and intellectual life since migrating to Australia in 1974. His recent works include A Genocide Alphabet (2025) and Τίνος πατρίδα είναι; (2025), both co-authored with Toula Nicolacopoulos, alongside the poetry collection Ashpoems.

Organisers say the event aims to encourage open, critical discussion on how Greek Australians engage with contemporary debates around sovereignty, national identity and belonging, while also inviting participants to help shape future conversations within the community.

The forum is open to the public, with attendees encouraged to listen, participate in the discussion and contribute ideas for future Greek Australian Conversations events.
