South Australia’s Pontians commemorate genocide with wreath laying ceremony

The Pontian Brotherhood of South Australia commemorated the Pontian Greek genocide on Sunday, May 2 with a memorial service and wreath laying at Salisbury.

Commemorations began at 10am with a Divine Liturgy and memorial service held at the Greek Orthodox Church of Agios Dimitrios in Salisbury Plain.

A wreath laying ceremony followed at Salisbury Memorial Park Cemetery from 11.30am and was attended by a number of officials.

This included the Consul General of Greece in Adelaide, George Psiachas; the Member for Florey, Michael Brown MP; the City of Salisbury’s Deputy Mayor, Chad Buchanan; the President of the Pontian Brotherhood of SA, Nazareth Nalpantidis Chisholm; the Vice President of the Greek Orthodox Community of SA (GOCSA), Stephanie Skordas; and representatives from the Armenian Cultural Association of South Australia Inc.

After wreaths were laid, people returned to the home of the Pontian Brotherhood in Pennington for light refreshments.
