Eleni Kounalakis has shared her intention to run for the position of California’s Governor in the 2026 state elections in the United States, Ekathimerini has reported.

If elected, Kounalakis would become the state’s first female Governor.

Kounalakis is a Greek American politician currently serving as California’s 50th Lieutenant Governor.

In a post on Twitter, Kounalakis expressed her appreciation for the opportunities California has provided her with, and stressed her determination to ensure that every family has an equal chance to achieve a prosperous future.

“As Lieutenant Governor, I’ve worked hard to make our state work better for all Californians – making college more affordable, fighting against climate change, and championing abortion rights and gender equality,” she said in a statement.

“I grew up as the daughter of a Greek immigrants and like many other families, we had humble beginnings. My siblings and I were reminded every day how lucky we were to have the opportunity this country offers.”

The announcement comes as the 2024 US presidential election is on the horizon, with many politicians confirming their run. Current US President Joe Biden has announced he is set to run again for his party.
