SYRIZA leader Alexis Tsipras pledges to legalise same-sex marriage in Greece

·

Greece’s opposition leader, Alexis Tsipras, has pledged that if he wins in May’s general election he will legalise same-sex marriage with full parental rights.

According to ekathimerini.com, the leader of the SYRIZA Party, Alexis Tsipras, said his government would grant same-sex couples the legal right to marry. If this happens, Greece will be the first predominantly Orthodox Christian country to do so.

“The time has finally come, victory for our party will… mean full rights for couples regardless of their gender,” Tsipras said on Monday in a recorded video message at an event organised by the youth wing of his party.

Tsipras said Greece should adopt the European Parliament recommendations passed in 2021, whereby EU members were encouraged to fully harmonise rights for same-sex couples with others granted.

Italy and Greece are two countries which have not yet recognised same-sex marriage in Western Europe, as they have done with civil partnership. In 2015, Tsipras had legalised same-sex civil unions.
