On Sunday May 15th, the Greek School of the Cyprus Community of NSW celebrated its 20th anniversary, at the Community’s Club in Stanmore.

Launching the event, Community Secretary Roula Christodoulides, spoke about how the school is “one of the most important parts to our community” and stressed how important it is for the kids to learn our language and keep it alive.

Greek style markets were set up at the back of the Cyprus Community’s auditorium where people could buy books, plants, snacks and paintings created by the students.

The market’s ‘coffee shop’ sold frappes while the ‘eatery’ sold souvlakia and sausage sizzle. All products and food were donated to the school for the event and all the proceeds received on the day were donated back to the school.

CEO of the NSW Federation of Community Language Schools and founder of the school, Michael Christodoulou, reconfirmed that the Cyprus Government approved a $10,000 grant for the school and announced that he will be travelling to Cyprus this year to try and get assistance on an annual basis.

The High Commissioner of the Republic of Cyprus to Australia, Martha Mavrommatis and Education Officer from the Department of Education, Alex Di Prinzio also attended as special guests and were presented with awards and certificates for their support.

Ms Mavrommatis reiterated her support for the community and said “how wonderful and amazing it was to see the language and culture alive and well in Sydney.”

The Cyprus Community committee thanked the volunteers for their hard work and extended their gratitude to teachers Olympia Palama, Nikolia Kollia, Myrto Georgakopoulos and Roxani Papoutsaki for their efforts.
