St Nectarios Burwood raises $3,880 for NSW floods through film screening

·

The St Nectarios Parish and Community in Burwood have raised $3,880 to go towards supporting those people who’s livelihoods have been impacted by the recent NSW floods.

Fifty percent of the funds will go to the Australian Red Cross, whilst the remaining fifty percent will be given to Food Bank, the Parish said on Facebook.

The funds were raised during a private film screening of ‘Man of God’ at Event Cinemas in Burwood, which was attended by 230 people.

The film showcases the life of the Parish’s Patron, Saint Nectarios, and has been a huge hit both in Australia and internationally.

“It was a truly amazing and moving experience to see the life of our Patron, Saint Nectarios, come to life on the big screen and to understand more about his compassion, humility, intelligence and suffering, as well as his impact on our faith and on the society in which he lived. A true example and inspiration for us all,” Christina Efthymiades, who is on the St Nectarios Parish Board, tells The Greek Herald.

“In our Parish and Community’s long tradition and spirit of giving and connecting with the broader community, we decided to direct proceeds of our private screening to those affected by the recent NSW floods and it was so great to see the outpouring of support we had for this cause.

“We have raised almost $4,000 already and expect another $2,000 from our second smaller screening on 29 May, which will be directed towards Red Cross and Food Bank.”

In the meantime, the Parish’s Youth In Action group is also organising a multicultural Fuse Fest on Saturday, May 14 at Burwood Park to raise funds for Lucas Gardens School in Canada Bay – a school for children with special needs.

Youth In Action is hoping to raise funds to purchase at least one Gravity Relaxation Chair for the school. These chairs cost $2,500 each and support students who use wheelchairs by helping them sit in a more comfortable position in the classroom.

Attendees on the day will be able to enjoy dancing and singing from diverse cultures including Greek, Chinese and Spanish, as well as purchase Greek food and sweets available on the day.

Details:

  • You can purchase tickets to the second screening of ‘Man of God’ here.
  • Fuse Fest will be held on Saturday, May 14 at 12.30pm to 6pm. The event will be held at Burwood Park Community Centre and Pavilion, Burwood Park.
