PM Mitsotakis has packed diplomatic schedule for January 2020

·

The first month of the upcoming new year will see Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis and the Greek government engaging in a number of diplomacy acts, including:

  • The EastMed pipeline agreement
  • PM Mitsotakis visiting Trump the White House
  • PM Mitsotakis visiting Macron in Paris

January 2nd, 2020

The first will be the singing of the EastMed pipeline agreement in Athens on January 2nd, which is a collective response between Greece, Cyprus and Israel (and backed by the European Union) to invalidate the memorandums signed by Turkey and Libya.

Greece considers the agreement between Turkey and Libya as a breach of international law, as it threatens its drilling interests around Cyprus and Crete.

Greece has described the intention of the EastMed pipeline agreement to create a “diplomatic shield” against Turkey.

January 7th, 2020

The Prime Minister will also meet US President Donald Trump at the White House on January 7th.

Mitsotakis will set out with the intention to gain the support of the US in invalidating the Turkey-Libya agreement, as well as drawing attention to Ankara’s provocative actions toward Greece and the wider world, and their failure to promote regional stability.

Later in January 2020

Prime Minister Mitsotakis will then head to Paris for a meeting with French President Emmanuel Macron.

The French president has so far been Greece’s strongest supporter and is now taking on a leading role, expressing great interest in events in the southeastern Mediterranean.
