Athenian Association of NSW hosts ‘Rebetiko of Athens’ evening

·

The Athenian Association of NSW has thanked the community for its strong support following a successful “Athenian Night – Rebetiko of Athens” event held at the Greek Orthodox Community of NSW in Lakemba.

Dedicated to the history, spirit and enduring cultural value of Greek rebetiko music, the evening brought together members of the Greek Australian community for a celebration of one of Greece’s most influential musical traditions.

In a statement following the event, the Association said the large attendance, emotional atmosphere and enthusiastic participation from guests demonstrated the continued strength of Greek culture within Sydney’s Greek community.

The evening featured distinguished guests, stories and musical tributes exploring important moments in the history of rebetiko music, while performances throughout the night created what organisers described as a deeply meaningful cultural experience.

A major highlight of the event was a performance by Sofia Ventouris’ dance group, whose energetic παρουσία and traditional dancing drew strong applause from attendees.

Organisers said the group’s performance reflected the commitment of younger generations of Greek Australians to preserving and celebrating Greek traditions, music and dance.

The Association also expressed gratitude to renowned singer Mario, author and music historian Kostas Balachoutis, and legendary composer Christos Nikolopoulos, who contributed special video messages from overseas in support of the event and the Greek community in Australia.

The Athenian Association of NSW said it remains committed to organising initiatives that promote Greek culture, strengthen community ties and pass cultural traditions on to future generations.
