A new 88-room Voco hotel development in Darwin has opened as a tribute to late Territory builder John Halikos, with his family describing the project as a deeply personal final milestone in his work.
The Voco Darwin suites, delivered by JH Group, have converted the former Health House building into a premium accommodation offering under the IHG brand, marking the first Voco Suites launch in Australia.
Halikos’ son Tony said the opening reflected his father’s vision for the city’s future and his commitment to Darwin.
“This project is deeply personal for our amazing team and family,” he said.
“Dad had a genuine passion, and love for Darwin and always saw the exciting potential of the IHG Voco project in the CBD.
“We’re doing this for Dad, and honouring the vision he always had for Darwin and the community he loved.”
The hotel includes one- and two-bedroom suites with city and ocean views, many featuring private balconies, as well as The Aviary Bar and Brasserie offering modern Australian cuisine and regional flavours.
Guest amenities include a plunge pool, 24-hour gym, event spaces, fast wi-fi, smart room features and upgraded bathroom facilities.
IHG portfolio general manager Sean DeSouza said the launch highlighted confidence in Darwin’s growth as a destination.
“Voco Darwin suites is a proud moment for our team and for the Territory,” he said. “This opening brings a globally recognised premium brand into the heart of Darwin, while still delivering a distinctly local sense of warmth, personality and connection,” he said.

The development joins five other Voco properties in Australasia as part of IHG’s expanding global portfolio.
