Trump blasts Australia as he declares US doesn’t need allies in Iran war

·

President Donald Trump says the US does not need help from allies in the Iran war, criticising NATO and countries including Australia after they declined to send warships to the Strait of Hormuz.

“Because of the fact that we have had such Military Success, we no longer ‘need’, or desire, the NATO Countries’ assistance – WE NEVER DID!” he said, adding: “WE DO NOT NEED THE HELP OF ANYONE!”

Trump also suggested the US could reconsider its NATO role, saying: “When they don’t help us, it’s certainly something we should think about … I’m not exactly thrilled.”

The comments came as counterterrorism chief Joe Kent resigned, saying he could not “in good conscience” support the war.

Australia has ruled out involvement, with Catherine King MP confirming no request had been made.
