Alexis Tsipras resigns from parliament amid speculation of new political movement

·

Former Greek Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras has announced his resignation from parliament, sparking widespread speculation that he may be preparing to return to politics with a new centrist movement.

In a statement delivered on Monday, Tsipras hinted at a comeback, telling supporters: “Maybe soon we will travel together again to more beautiful seas.”

The remark was seen by many as a symbolic message of renewal and a signal of his possible re-entry into frontline politics.

Tsipras, who led Greece through the height of its financial crisis as head of SYRIZA between 2015 and 2019, has remained an influential figure even after his party’s electoral defeat to the ruling New Democracy.

His departure from parliament comes amid growing political volatility and deep voter dissatisfaction, with recent polls showing that nearly nine in ten Greeks say they do not trust any of the existing political parties.

Analysts suggest that these conditions could pave the way for a new political force, with Tsipras potentially positioning himself as the leader of a progressive, pro-European alternative to both the conservatives and the far left.

Political observers in Athens believe any new movement led by Tsipras would seek to broaden cooperation among Greece’s progressive and socialist factions, possibly mirroring his ally Nikolas Farantouris’ growing collaboration with the European Socialists in the European Parliament.
