WA Parliament hosts discussion on book honouring Colonel George Devine Treloar

·

The Hon. Maryka Groenewald MLC hosted an afternoon tea discussion on Tuesday, 30 September at the Parliament of Western Australia around the groundbreaking book Genocide to Regeneration the photographs of George Devine Treloar by Prof David Treloar (UWA retired) and Dr Panayiotis Diamadis.

As Dr Diamadis emphasised: “This event is very special as it is the first time the co-authors have presented our book together, being physically present in the same place.”

Both Greek Consul Eleni Georgopoulou and Ms Groenewald expressed their admiration, as much for the legacy of Colonel Treloar in Greece as for ‘Genocide to Regeneration the photographs of George Devine Treloar’ (published by Unity in Philia).

Prof Treloar related stories of his father’s work amongst survivors of the Hellenic, Armenian and Assyrian Genocides in Greece in the 1920s. Using his camera, Colonel Treloar documented his work and the survivors he assisted in rebuilding their shattered lives.

Dr Diamadis unpacked his field research, walking in the footsteps of Colonel Treloar in various places in Thrace and Macedonia. In this way, the locations of many photographs were identified, restoring large parts of the Treloar stories.

Prof Treloar and Dr Diamadis presented Greek Consul Ms Georgopoulou and Ms Groenewald with copies of their book as a thank you for their support.

Those in attendance included:

  • the Hon. Maryka Groenewald MLC
  • Candice Parsons, Electorate Officer, Office of the Hon. Maryka Groenewald MLC
  • Consul Ms. Eleni Georgopoulou and Mr. Kyriakos Tsoulis
