Greek Community of Melbourne condemns neo-Nazi attack on Camp Sovereignty

·

The Greek Community of Melbourne (GCM) has strongly condemned the violent assault on Camp Sovereignty by far-right demonstrators attached to Sunday’s ‘March for Australia’ rally in Victoria.

According to reports, a group of demonstrators broke away from the rally and launched an attack on the longstanding First Nations protest site, physically and verbally assaulting people. Four people were injured in the confrontation, including one woman who was hospitalised.

In a statement on Monday, the GCM called the attack “violent and unprovoked” and expressed solidarity with First Nations Australians.

“Camp Sovereignty is a long-standing revered gathering place and powerful symbol of First Nations sovereignty,” the statement read.

While reaffirming support for the right to peaceful protest, the organisation criticised the ‘March for Australia’ rally, saying it was “premised on misinformation about Australian migration and seemed a veiled attempt by far-right elements to foster resentment of immigrants and by extension multicultural Australia.”

The GCM said it stood with all Australians who share migrant roots, highlighting the role of immigrant families in building the nation’s cultural, civic and economic life.

“We do not support the othering of people. We do not support the spread of misinformation designed to sow fear in Australian society. We condemn all hate speech and acts of violence,” the statement concluded.

The GCM’s comments follow bipartisan condemnation of the weekend’s anti-immigration rallies, which also drew the presence of neo-Nazi groups.
