Conviction overturned for SA man Nicholas Sianis in 2012 murder case

·

Nicholas Sianis, 36, of Beverley, is among seven men whose murder convictions over the 2012 shooting of Jason De Ieso have been overturned by South Australia’s Court of Appeal.

The men were found guilty in October 2023 following a five-month trial and over 30 hours of jury deliberations.

However, the Court of Appeal—comprising Chief Justice Chris Kourakis, Acting Chief Justice Mark Livesey, and Justice Chris Bleby—quashed the verdicts on Wednesday, June 18, citing issues with the jury directions on joint enterprise liability. The case has been remitted for retrial.

De Ieso, 33, was an innocent bystander gunned down at his Pooraka paint shop amid a violent feud between the Finks and Hells Angels bikie gangs.

The court heard Sianis and others were associates or members of the Hells Angels.

A retrial date is yet to be set.
