295 of Greece’s coronavirus cases were imported from other countries, report reveals

·

A total of 295 foreign visitors were tested positive for Covid-19 in the period from July 1-19, Greece’s deputy minister for Civil Protection, Nikos Hardalias, said Tuesday.

He said that 76 percent of the imported cases were from Balkan countries, mainly tourists from Serbia.

While Greece was credited in the early stages of Covid-19 for imposing a lockdown as soon as possible, Hardalias has so far ruled out the possibility of a second nationwide lockdown. He also added that the introduction of local lockdowns was also unlikely.

The deputy minister concluded by saying that 53 cases were still active and warned tourists to be cautious when travelling.

“Targeted measures are doing the job,” he said, as he urged people to show discipline and follow the official guidelines to stem the spread of Covid-19.

Greece opened its borders in June. The country has rushed it’s reopening in order to retain part of their tourism earnings, which in April saw it suffer a drop of 98.7 percent.
