The owner of Kazzi Beach Greek restaurant in Sydney has slammed Mosman Council’s proposal to cut down the speed limit along the Balmoral beachfront.
Peter Papas said implementing a 40 km/hour speed limit “won’t make a blind bit of difference.” He said it’s impossible to travel beyond 40 km/hour in the area, and that he is unaware of the area having any speeding issues.
The Mosman Council has revealed that the proposed speed limits would apply along The Esplanade at Balmoral and on Military Road, from Spit Junction to Centenary Circle.
“It strikes me as a complete waste of time and money and a further extension of the nanny state where we introduce laws for every aspect of our lives when common sense should prevail,” Mr Papas said.
“The council should be focusing on delivering basic services or lowering parking rates.”
According to The Daily Telegraph, the roads selected for the speed limit were found suitable due to their classifications as “high pedestrian activity” areas.
Mosman Councillor Pip Friedrich supported the 40 km/hour limits, indicating they would ensure local roads are safe for all road users.
“The world doesn’t collapse because people have to slow down in these very high pedestrian streets,” she said.
$15,000 has been allocated towards the speed reduction measures with changes, if approved, to go ahead within six months.
