Hellenic Lyceum of Sydney formally unbox traditional costumes donated by Greek government

·

The Hellenic Lyceum of Sydney held a back-to-back double event on Wednesday, November 22.

The first event was a luncheon in honour of Dr Anastasia Christophilopoulou, Senior Curator of Eastern Mediterranean Antiquities of the Fitzwilliam Museum at Cambridge University.

Guests at the luncheon included the Consul General for Greece in Sydney, Ioannis Mallikourtis and his wife Christiana Stavrou, as well as Candace Richards, the Assistant Curator of the Nicholson Collection at the Chau Chak Wing Museum at Sydney University.

The President of the Sydney Lyceum, Liana Vertzayias, welcomed the guests and Dr Christophilopoulou to the event.

Mrs Vertzayias also thanked Ms Richards for the wonderful collaboration the Lyceum had together with the Nicholson Museum a few months ago. She also thanked the Alpha restaurant for their quality food, presentation and service.

The second event followed across the road at the premises of the Greek Consulate.

This event was the formal unboxing and presentation of four traditional costumes, donated by the Greek Government. The costumes were from the regions of Attiki, Lefkada, Skopelos and the national costume, Amalia.

Mrs Vertzayias had requested from Greece’s Cultural Minister Lina Mendoni during her visit to Australia that the Greek government donate the costumes.

The Consul General welcomed the Hellenic Lyceum to the Consulate, where the Association has a permanent exhibition in the reception area.

Mr Mallikourtis called on Mrs Vertzayias to commence formalities. In turn, Mrs Vertzayias thanked the Consul General for his hospitality and for his support in conveying the costumes to Australia and also thanked the Greek Government for its generous donation.
