Maria Sakkari makes history at the China Open

·

Maria Sakkari made history at the China Open on Tuesday, becoming the first Greek tennis player to make it into the last 16.

Sakkari defeated Linda Fruhvirtova in straight sets 6-4 6-2 to enter the last 16, taking another step towards qualifying for the WTA Finals.

Sakkari, who had a performance bye due to her participation in the semi-finals in Tokyo last week, started her duties in Beijing from the second round and steadily maintained the high level she has had since Guadalajara.

Although it was definitely not her best night and especially in her backhand she faced several problems, Sakkari managed to overcome them and showed character in the most critical points.

The Greek will next face Xin Wang from China in the third round.
