Suspected Australian drug trafficker appeals extradition from Greece

·

A 41-year-old Australian national, apprehended in Mykonos in July 2021 on suspicion of involvement in an international drug syndicate, has lodged an appeal with the Greece’s Council of State, contesting the decision to extradite him to the United States.

US authorities allege that between May 2019 and May 2021, the man played a role in a plot to launder drug proceeds in Florida and to illicitly transport significant quantities of cocaine from Colombia, through California, to Australia.

Since his apprehension, the man has been held in Korydallos prisons in Athens. He is listed on Interpol’s most-wanted roster.

He contends that during the US investigation, law enforcement exceeded their authority and ensnared him, infringing his right to a fair trial.

In his appeal, he also highlights severe health concerns linked to a pacemaker implanted while in Greek custody, as well as apprehensions regarding the adequacy of medical services within US detention facilities.
