Greece’s Zagorochoria added to UNESCO’s World Heritage List

·

Announced at the World Heritage Committee’s 45th session in Saudi Arabia, the Zagori region of Greece has been included in UNESCO’s World Heritage List.

The region in northwestern Greece is an awe-inspiring natural landscape which contains 46 small stone villages known as Zagorochoria and features national parks, a monastery, rivers, and waterfalls.

Traditionally the villages are organised around a central square with the network of stone arched bridges, cobbled paths and staircases all linking the villages together to form a strong social and political community.

With the original nomination for Zagori being brought forth by Greece in 2022, the Cultural Minster Lina Mendoni has said that this recognition is the first time a cultural area, not linked to Ancient History has been recognised for its modern cultural heritage.
