Heroic 10-man South Melbourne stun Altona Magic to keep finals dream alive

Against all odds, South Melbourne FC achieved a heroic 2–0 victory over Altona Magic over the weekend. Not only did they escape the threat of relegation, but they are now mathematically hopeful for a spot in the championship playoffs, having closed the gap to just 5 points from 6th place in the standings.

On Saturday night at Lakeside, South Melbourne played with 10 men from the 28th minute. They took an early lead in the 6th minute (1–0) with a goal by Nahuel Bonada, and just five minutes later, the same player came close to scoring again, hitting the crossbar with a close-range header.

South Melbourne continued to press for a second goal, but the referee had a different opinion.

In the 28th minute, during a challenge for the ball, he controversially awarded a free kick and showed a straight red card to Marko Jankovic – a decision that sparked intense protests from South Melbourne players, officials, and fans over the recurring refereeing “butchery” that has cost the team over 10 points this season.

In the 49th minute, Jack Pope – for the second consecutive match – scored a thunderous goal from 25 meters to make it 2–0 and laid the foundation for his team’s victory.

From then until the final whistle, South Melbourne held onto their 2–0 lead with smart tactics, securing their most valuable win of the season. 

On Wednesday morning, the South Melbourne players will travel to Hobart, Tasmania with morale running high to face South Hobart in the Round of 32 of the Australia Cup.
