Greek Community of Melbourne supports Greece’s strict stance on border control

·

The Greek Community of Melbourne (GCM) recently announced their support for Greece’s border control, and by extension the European Union, in a statement on Wednesday.

In the statement, the GCM support the joint position between the EU and Greece on the forced expulsion of refugees and economic migrants by Turkey towards Greece and Europe. The statement added that they remain concerned about the fate of these refugees and economic migrants that are entering Greece.

“Turkey is forcefully expelling from its borders armed with false hopes and in clear contravention of its agreement with the European Union,” the statement says.

“Greece faces a crisis on its borders not of its own making.”

With multiple European leaders now promising their increased support for both Greece and the health of the migrants, it is now up to the leaders to deliver those commitments.

“…Greece’s efforts in managing this latest wave is not only a task it undertakes for its own sovereignty, but the sovereignty of the whole of Europe,” the statement adds.

It was recently announced by European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen that EU countries Finland, France, Germany, Luxembourg and Portugal have all agreed to take in child migrants.

Among them, other countries have pledged their loyalty to Greece, agreeing with their strict stance on border control. Austria were the latest to pronounce their gratefulness after Kyriakos Mitsotakis met with Chancellor Sebastian Kurz in Vienna.

”Mr. Erdogan abuses refugees, and immigrants who have been living in Turkey for years; he exploits them and uses them as a weapon against the EU,” the Austrian leader declared.
