NSW Police are searching for two men caught on CCTV spraying an unknown oil-based substance on Sydney’s Anzac Memorial in Hyde Park.
The men, described as Caucasian and aged in their 50s or 60s, spent about 20 minutes at the site on Thursday afternoon, carrying small bottles concealed in a bag and a red shopping trolley.
They spread the liquid across multiple surfaces, including the memorial’s interior hall, walls, steps and granite exterior.
Police say stains remain visible on the 1930s heritage-listed landmark, with clean-up costs estimated between $5,000 and $20,000. The motive behind the incident is unknown.
Chief Inspector Gary Coffey described the act as “absolutely disgusting” and urged the public to help identify the pair: “The footage is excellent quality. Someone will know them.”
Built between 1932 and 1934, the Anzac Memorial commemorates the Australians who served and died in World War I and II, and is considered a sacred site. A number of Greek community events for the Battle of Crete and OXI Day have been held at the site in recent years.
