Greek police investigate shocking case of elderly woman buried in stable

·

Greek authorities are investigating a shocking case in rural south-central Boeotia, where police discovered the remains of a 90-year-old woman hidden inside an abandoned stable.

The body, wrapped in bedding and in an advanced state of decomposition, is believed to belong to the mother of a 62-year-old local woman employed as a supervisor at a citizen’s service centre (KEP).

Police say the daughter admitted to concealing her mother’s death, which she claimed occurred naturally in 2023. She allegedly recruited a foreign farm worker to assist with the burial, explaining that financial hardship drove her to continue receiving her mother’s pension and disability benefits.

The deception was uncovered after neighbours alerted authorities, saying they had not seen the elderly woman for years. When questioned, the daughter reportedly attempted to mislead both locals and police, at times presenting another elderly woman as her mother. Officers later discovered the truth using a photograph that revealed the impostor was unrelated.

Charges have been filed against the 62-year-old, including fraud, false testimony, failure to report a death, and negligent homicide. She has been brought before prosecutors and is expected to stand trial.

Investigators are now focusing on several unresolved issues: whether the elderly woman’s death was the result of neglect or foul play, the precise role of the alleged accomplice — whose identity remains unclear — and the extent of the financial damage caused to the state. An autopsy will be crucial in determining the exact time and cause of death.

Local officials described the accused as a reclusive figure with little contact with the wider community. Residents told police that they had not seen the victim alive for as long as five years, casting further doubt on the daughter’s version of events.

Authorities emphasised that the investigation remains open and criminal involvement has not yet been ruled out.
