For Greek Australians working in medicine, Greece’s latest repatriation push may carry particular significance, with fast-track recognition pathways now available for doctors trained and practising abroad.
As part of the government’s broader “Rebrain Greece” initiative, Greek authorities have introduced accelerated procedures for recognising qualifications held by Greek doctors working in countries including Australia, the United Kingdom, United States, Canada, Switzerland and New Zealand.
The measure is designed to make it easier for highly skilled Greek professionals overseas to return and work in Greece, particularly in sectors facing workforce shortages.
The announcement comes ahead of the latest “Rebrain Greece” recruitment event in London on May 9, where 35 major companies operating in Greece will meet with diaspora professionals to discuss employment opportunities.
Led by the Ministry of Labour and Social Security, the initiative forms part of Greece’s ongoing effort to reverse decades of brain drain that saw hundreds of thousands leave the country during the economic crisis.
For Australia’s large Greek diaspora – including medical professionals who have built careers within the Australian healthcare system – the streamlined recognition process could remove one of the longstanding barriers to returning to Greece professionally.
Greek Labour Minister Niki Kerameus said the government is intensifying efforts to reconnect skilled expatriates with opportunities back home, pointing to growing return migration and new incentives aimed at attracting talent back to Greece.
