Greek actor Petros Filippidis handed suspended prison sentence for attempted rape

·

Prominent Greek actor Petros Filippidis was sentenced to three years in prison with a three-year suspension by the Athens Mixed Jury Court of Appeal on Tuesday, July 15.

The 4–3 decision means he will not serve time unless he violates his parole conditions.

Filippidis was unanimously found guilty of two attempted rapes: one in a theatre dressing room in 2010, and another in his car in the Athens suburb of Psychiko in 2014.

The court also unanimously rejected any mitigating factors, despite the prosecutor’s proposal to consider his previously lawful conduct and claimed moral rehabilitation.

Defence lawyer Michalis Dimitrakopoulos condemned the ruling as a “judicial error,” noting that Filippidis had already spent 11 months in pretrial detention and suffers from poor health.

Filippidis had originally received an eight-year prison sentence, also suspended pending appeal.

His legal team now plans to appeal to the Supreme Court, seeking full acquittal or a reduced sentence.
