Greece’s Supreme Court challenges release of terrorist Alexandros Giotopoulos

·

Greece’s Supreme Court prosecutor has challenged the conditional release of November 17 terrorist group leader Alexandros Giotopoulos.

Giotopoulos, also known as “Lambros,” was sentenced in 2003 to 17 life sentences plus an additional 25 years for his role in 17 murders, as well as involvement in bomb attacks, armed robberies and participation in a terrorist organisation.

Deputy Supreme Court Prosecutor Sofoklis Logothetis filed an appeal to annul the court ruling that freed the 82-year-old leader, arguing that the legal prerequisites for his release had not been met.

According to the Logothetis’ assessment, Giotopoulos has not served the minimum time required for inmates sentenced to multiple life terms, and claims that no significant change in circumstanceshas justified the release.

The case will now be examined by a judicial council of the Supreme Court in early June to decide whether the court ruling will be upheld or overturned.
